Chiang Mai Zoo is a zoological park located in the Amphoe Mueang Chiang Mai district of Chiang Mai, Thailand.

It houses a diverse collection of animals within a landscaped environment.

Visual Characteristics

The zoo covers an area of approximately 81 acres. Enclosures vary in construction, utilizing concrete, metal fencing, and natural barriers like moats and rockwork. Vegetation within the zoo includes a mix of tropical trees and manicured gardens, providing shade in many areas. The terrain is gently sloped.

Location & Access Logistics

Chiang Mai Zoo is situated approximately 5 kilometers north of the Chiang Mai Old City. Access is primarily via Huay Kaew Road. Private vehicle parking is available on-site, with a fee. Public transport options include Songthaews (red shared taxis) that operate on routes passing the zoo entrance. Bus routes serving the city center also have stops near the zoo.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Established in 1977, Chiang Mai Zoo was initially conceived as a recreational area for the public. It was developed on land previously used for agricultural purposes. The zoo's ecological context is within the foothills of the Doi Suthep mountain range, characterized by tropical savanna and deciduous forest ecosystems.

Key Highlights & Activities

Visitors can observe a range of animal species including elephants, tigers, lions, giraffes, zebras, and various primate species. The zoo features a large aquarium with freshwater and saltwater exhibits. Penguin feeding demonstrations occur daily at 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM. A monorail system operates within the zoo, offering a narrated tour of select enclosures.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Restroom facilities are located at multiple points throughout the zoo. Shaded areas are provided by mature trees and covered pavilions. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally consistent within the zoo grounds. Food vendors and a central restaurant are available within the park.

Best Time to Visit

The optimal time for visiting is during the cooler months, from November to February. Mornings, between 9:00 AM and 11:00 AM, offer more active animal behavior before the midday heat. The zoo is open daily from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Facts & Legends

Chiang Mai Zoo is home to the first giant panda exhibit in Thailand, a gift from the Chinese government. The pandas, named Chuang Chuang and Lin Hui, arrived in 2003. A specific tip for visitors is to utilize the monorail early in the day to get an overview before exploring on foot.
