Espanola Way is a pedestrian street located in Miami Beach, Florida. It features a collection of historic buildings with Mediterranean Revival architecture.

Visual Characteristics

The street is lined with two- and three-story buildings constructed primarily from stucco and concrete. Facades exhibit arched windows, wrought-iron balconies, and terracotta roof tiles. Building colors range from pale yellow and coral to white and light blue. The street itself is paved with cobblestones and features outdoor seating areas for restaurants and cafes.

Location & Access Logistics

Espanola Way is situated between Washington Avenue and Drexel Avenue, one block south of Lincoln Road. It is approximately 10 miles east of Miami International Airport (MIA). Access by car is via Washington Avenue or Drexel Avenue. Public parking is available in the nearby municipal garages on 7th Street and Collins Avenue. Several Miami-Dade Transit bus routes serve the vicinity, including routes 120 and S.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Espanola Way was developed in the 1920s by developer George E. Merrick as part of his larger vision for Miami. The original purpose was to create a European-style village with shops and residences. The architectural style reflects the Mediterranean Revival trend popular in South Florida during that era.

Key Highlights & Activities

Visitors can walk the pedestrian street, observe the architecture, and dine at the various restaurants and cafes. Live music performances often occur in the evenings. Shopping for souvenirs and local crafts is also available.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Restrooms are available within most dining establishments. Shade is provided by awnings and umbrellas at outdoor seating areas. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally strong. Numerous food vendors and restaurants are present along the street.

Best Time to Visit

The street is most active in the evenings, particularly from Thursday to Sunday. For photography, early morning or late afternoon offers softer lighting. The months of March through May and September through November typically provide the most comfortable weather conditions.

Facts & Legends

During the Prohibition era, some of the establishments on Espanola Way were rumored to operate as speakeasies. The street was designed to evoke the atmosphere of a Spanish village, complete with a central plaza concept.
