Visual Characteristics
This 820,000-gallon swimming pool is carved from a former coral rock quarry. It features waterfalls, grottos, and a bridge constructed from local limestone. The water is a clear, light blue, and the surrounding rock formations are a pale, off-white to light gray.

The Venetian Pool is situated at 2701 De Soto Boulevard, Coral Gables, FL 33134. It is approximately 10 kilometers southwest of downtown Miami. Access is via US-1 South (South Dixie Highway) to Red Road (SW 57th Avenue), then east on Sunset Drive to De Soto Boulevard. Parking is available in a designated lot adjacent to the pool. Public transport options include Miami-Dade Transit bus routes 27 and 52, which stop within walking distance.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Construction began in 1924 and was completed in 1925. The pool was designed by architect Phineas Paist and built by George E. Merrick as part of his Mediterranean-revival style development of Coral Gables. It is the only swimming pool in the United States built within a former coral rock quarry.
Key Highlights & Activities
Swimming is the primary activity. Visitors can explore the cave-like grottos and walk across the bridge. The pool depth varies from 1 foot to 17 feet. Lifeguards are on duty during operating hours.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Restrooms and changing facilities are available. Shade is provided by palm trees and covered seating areas. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally available. Food vendors are not present within the pool area, but concessions are available for purchase.
Best Time to Visit
The best time of day for photography is mid-morning or late afternoon when the sun angle creates distinct shadows on the rock formations. The pool is open year-round, but the months of April through September offer the warmest water temperatures. High tide is not a relevant factor for this pool.
Facts & Legends
The pool was originally named "Fountain Plaza" and was intended to be part of a larger entertainment complex. It was renamed "Venetian Pool" to evoke the atmosphere of Venice, Italy. During World War II, the pool was drained and used as a parking lot for war bonds.
