Garuda Wisnu Kencana (GWK), Bali, Indonesia, Asia

Garuda Wisnu Kencana (GWK) is a large cultural park and statue complex located in Ungasan, Badung Regency, Bali, Indonesia.

The park's centerpiece is a colossal statue depicting the Hindu deity Vishnu riding his mount, the mythical Garuda bird.

Visual Characteristics

The GWK statue is constructed from a combination of stainless steel and copper, with a total height of 122 meters (400 feet) and a width of 64 meters (210 feet). The statue is predominantly bronze-colored, with intricate detailing on the figures of Vishnu and Garuda. The base of the statue is a multi-story building housing exhibition spaces and viewing platforms. The surrounding parkland features limestone cliffs and open green spaces.

Location & Access Logistics

GWK is situated approximately 10 kilometers south of Denpasar, Bali's capital city. Access is via Jalan Uluwatu. The journey from Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS) takes approximately 30-45 minutes by car, depending on traffic. Ample parking is available on-site for cars and motorcycles. Several local taxi services and ride-sharing applications operate in the area. Public bus routes are limited in this specific location.

Historical & Ecological Origin

The concept for GWK was conceived by artist Nyoman Nuarta in 1997. The statue's construction was a multi-year project, with the final completion and inauguration in 2018. The original purpose was to create a landmark that would serve as a symbol of Bali's cultural heritage and spiritual values, intended to be a global icon. The site itself is characterized by karst limestone formations, typical of the Bukit Peninsula.

Key Highlights & Activities

Visitors can ascend to the base of the statue for panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The GWK Cultural Park hosts regular cultural performances, including traditional Balinese dance shows, in its amphitheater. The park also features exhibition halls displaying art and cultural artifacts. Walking tours of the park grounds are available. Photography opportunities are abundant throughout the complex.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Restrooms are available within the park facilities. Shaded areas are provided by the statue's structure and strategically placed gazebos. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally strong within the park. Food and beverage vendors are located within the park's designated areas, offering local and international cuisine.

Best Time to Visit

For optimal lighting conditions for photography, the late afternoon, approximately 1-2 hours before sunset, is recommended. The weather in Bali is generally warm year-round. The dry season, from April to September, offers less rainfall. There are no specific tide requirements for visiting GWK.

Facts & Legends

A local legend associated with the statue's imagery tells of Vishnu's intervention to save the world from the tyrannical Naga Basuki, with Garuda acting as his steed. An interesting logistical fact is that the statue's construction involved over 1,000 workers and utilized advanced engineering techniques to ensure its stability on the limestone plateau.
