Kimisagara Market, Kigali, Rwanda, Africa

Hotel des Mille Collines is a four-star international hotel and historic landmark located in the Kiyovu District of Kigali. It is situated on KN 2nd Street, approximately 0.5km south of the Kigali City Tower and the central business district.

Visual Characteristics

The hotel is a mid-rise concrete structure featuring a white and cream exterior with symmetrical rows of private balconies. The architectural style is functionalist modernism, typical of the early 1970s, characterized by clean lines and a rectangular footprint. The interior lobby utilizes polished marble flooring, dark wood accents, and African art installations. A central feature is the large outdoor swimming pool, tiled in blue mosaic and surrounded by a stone-paved sun deck and a thatched-roof poolside bar. The property is elevated on a ridge, offering 360-degree views of the surrounding hills.

Location & Access Logistics

Access is via KN 2nd Street, a paved road branching off the main KN 3 Road arterial. The hotel is a 20-minute drive from Kigali International Airport (KGL). Private vehicles and taxis enter through a secure gated checkpoint leading to a paved parking lot with a capacity for approximately 60 cars. Public transport "matatus" stop at the "Kiyovu" or "City Center" stations, followed by a 400-meter walk. Motorcycle taxis (motos) have a designated drop-off point at the main entrance.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Opened in 1973 by the Belgian airline Sabena, the hotel was the first grand hotel in Rwanda. During the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, the hotel served as a refuge for over 1,200 people, an event later depicted in the film Hotel Rwanda. The building sits on a stable metamorphic rock formation on the Kiyovu hill, surrounded by mature tropical vegetation including palms and flamboyant trees. It underwent extensive renovations in 2005 and 2015 to modernize its infrastructure while preserving its original structural silhouette.

Key Highlights & Activities

Fine dining is available at the "Le Panorama" restaurant on the top floor, specializing in French and Rwandan fusion cuisine. The poolside bar, "Le Pool," hosts live "Inanga" (traditional harp) music and jazz performances on weekends. The facility includes a fitness center, tennis courts, and several high-specification conference rooms for corporate events. Photography is permitted in the public lobby and pool areas, though professional shoots require prior authorization from management.

Infrastructure & Amenities

The hotel provides 112 rooms and suites equipped with high-speed fiber-optic Wi-Fi and satellite television. Modern public restrooms are located near the lobby and the pool area. The entire compound has consistent 5G cellular coverage. Security is maintained 24/7 by armed personnel, bag scanners, and CCTV surveillance. A boutique gift shop in the lobby sells local handicrafts and coffee. Backup power is provided by industrial-scale diesel generators.

Best Time to Visit

The best time for photography is during the "Golden Hour" (17:15 to 18:00) at the rooftop restaurant to capture the sunset over Mount Kigali. The poolside area is most active during the dry seasons (June–August and December–February). Friday evenings are recommended for those wishing to experience traditional Rwandan music and social atmosphere at the bar.

Facts & Legends

A verified historical fact is that during the 1994 siege, the hotel's swimming pool became the only source of water for the refugees trapped inside, as the municipal water supply had been severed. A local "secret" is the "Legacy Room," a small exhibition area that contains original ledger books and artifacts from the 1970s, documenting the early days of Rwandan international tourism.
