Parking is extremely limited in the immediate vicinity; metered street parking is available on surrounding streets, but is often occupied. The closest parking garages are several blocks away.

The land was originally part of the President's Park. It was formally laid out as a public square in 1824 and named Lafayette Square in honor of the Marquis de Lafayette's visit to the United States. The equestrian statues were installed between the 1880s and 1900s.
