The monument is an obelisk constructed from marble, granite, and bluestone gneiss. It stands 555 feet 5 1/8 inches (169.29 meters) tall. The structure is a plain, four-sided shaft that tapers to a pyramidion at the apex. Its exterior is a light grey color.

Construction of the Washington Monument began in 1848 but was halted in 1854 due to funding issues and political disputes. It was resumed in 1879 and completed in 1884.
