The Ellipse, Northwest Washington, USA Washington DC, North America
The Ellipse is a large, open parkland situated in Northwest Washington, D.C., south of the White House.
Visual Characteristics
This 17-acre parcel features a large, central lawn bordered by paved walkways. The perimeter is defined by mature trees, primarily deciduous species, providing shade. The ground surface is primarily grass, with some areas of compacted earth along high-traffic paths. The National Christmas Tree is located on the western side of the Ellipse.
Location & Access Logistics
The Ellipse is located between the White House Executive Residence to the north and the National Mall to the south. It is accessible from Constitution Avenue NW to the north and E Street NW to the south. Parking is limited to street parking on surrounding avenues, which is often metered and subject to restrictions during events. The closest Metro stations are Federal Triangle (Blue, Orange, Silver lines) and Smithsonian (Blue, Orange, Silver lines), both approximately 0.5km to the east. Several bus routes, including the 30s series and the Circulator National Mall route, stop along Constitution Avenue NW and 15th Street NW.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The Ellipse was originally part of the grounds of the President's House. In 1902, it was formally designated as a public park and landscaped. Its current form is largely a result of the 1930s redesign by the National Park Service, which aimed to create a more unified landscape connecting the White House to the National Mall. Ecologically, it is an urban parkland supporting a variety of common North American tree species and turfgrass.
Key Highlights & Activities
Activities include walking, picnicking, and informal recreation on the central lawn. The Ellipse is a frequent site for public events, including the National Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony and the National Easter Egg Roll. Photography of the White House from the north side is a common activity.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Restrooms are available in a permanent structure located on the western side of the Ellipse. Shade is provided by the mature trees. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally strong throughout the area. No permanent food vendors are located within the Ellipse itself, but numerous options exist along nearby streets and within the National Mall.
Best Time to Visit
For photography of the White House, early morning or late afternoon offers favorable lighting conditions. The months of April through October generally provide the most pleasant weather for outdoor activities. During winter, the Ellipse is a focal point for holiday events.
Facts & Legends
During the construction of the White House, the area was used for various purposes, including as a garden and a stable. A specific historical oddity is that the Ellipse was once the site of a small zoo operated by President Theodore Roosevelt, which housed animals such as a badger, a bear, and a lion cub.
