The building was originally constructed between 1859 and 1861 as the Corcoran Gallery of Art, designed by architect James Renwick Jr. It served as a private art museum until 1969 when it was acquired by the U.S. government and transferred to the Smithsonian Institution. The structure is an example of Second Empire architectural style.
