Lincoln Memorial, Northwest Washington, USA Washington DC, North America

The Lincoln Memorial is a national monument dedicated to Abraham Lincoln, located in Northwest Washington, D.C.

It is situated at the western end of the National Mall.

Visual Characteristics

The memorial is constructed from white Colorado Yule marble. It features a Greek Doric temple design, measuring 19 feet wide and 30 feet deep. The central chamber houses a large seated statue of Abraham Lincoln, 19 feet tall. The interior walls are inscribed with Lincoln's Second Inaugural Address and his Gettysburg Address. The exterior is surrounded by a colonnade of 36 Doric columns, representing the 36 states at the time of Lincoln's death.

Location & Access Logistics

The Lincoln Memorial is located at the western end of the National Mall, accessible via 23rd Street NW. It is approximately 3.5 miles (5.6 km) west of the U.S. Capitol Building. Parking is available in designated lots along Ohio Drive SW, though it is often limited, especially during peak hours. Public transport options include the Metro bus lines 30N, 30S, 33, 42, 43, and the Circulator National Mall route. The nearest Metro station is Foggy Bottom-GWU (Blue, Orange, Silver lines), which is approximately a 15-minute walk away.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Construction of the Lincoln Memorial began in 1914 and was completed in 1922. The architect was Henry Bacon, and the sculptor of the Lincoln statue was Daniel Chester French. The original purpose was to honor the 16th President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln, and commemorate the preservation of the Union during the Civil War.

Key Highlights & Activities

Visitors can view the seated statue of Abraham Lincoln. Reading the inscribed texts of the Second Inaugural Address and the Gettysburg Address is a primary activity. Observing the Reflecting Pool from the memorial steps is also a common visitor action. Photography of the memorial and its surroundings is permitted.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Restrooms are located in the basement of the memorial. Limited shade is available under the colonnade. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally available. Food vendors are typically located along the National Mall, but not directly at the memorial itself.

Best Time to Visit

For optimal lighting for photography, early morning or late afternoon provides softer light. The months of April, May, September, and October generally offer the most pleasant weather, with average temperatures ranging from 50°F to 70°F (10°C to 21°C). High tide is not a relevant factor for this inland monument.

Facts & Legends

A persistent urban legend suggests that the face of Abraham Lincoln was modeled after the sculptor Daniel Chester French's son, but this is unsubstantiated. A verified historical detail is that the memorial has served as a site for numerous significant civil rights demonstrations, including Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech in 1963.
