Visual Characteristics

The square is a rectangular plot of land measuring approximately 1.5 acres. It features a central fountain, paved walkways, and numerous mature trees providing canopy cover. Benches are strategically placed throughout the park. The perimeter is defined by low stone walls and iron fencing.

Location & Access Logistics

Several bus routes, including the 42, 43, and N2, N4, N6, stop at the square's perimeter.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Farragut Square was established in the mid-19th century as part of Pierre Charles L'Enfant's original plan for Washington, D.C. It was named in honor of Admiral David Farragut, a Union naval commander during the American Civil War. The square was designed as a public space for recreation and civic assembly. The trees are primarily deciduous species common to the mid-Atlantic region.

Key Highlights & Activities

Visitors can observe the central fountain, which operates seasonally. The square is a common location for lunchtime gatherings and informal meetings. It is a transit point for pedestrians moving between business districts. No organized activities are scheduled by the park authority, but spontaneous events may occur.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Restrooms are not available within the square itself, but are located in nearby commercial buildings. Shade is provided by the mature trees. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally strong throughout the square. Food vendors are not permanently stationed within the park, but food trucks often operate on adjacent streets during weekdays.

Best Time to Visit

For optimal lighting for photography, early morning or late afternoon provides softer light. The most pleasant weather conditions for outdoor use are typically from April to October. The square is accessible year-round during daylight hours.

Facts & Legends

A notable feature is the bronze statue of Admiral Farragut, which was dedicated in 1881. The statue is a popular meeting point and is often used as a reference for directions within the city.
