Marino Ballena National Park, Zona Sur, Costa Rica, North America
Marino Ballena National Park is a protected marine area located on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica, within the Zona Sur region.
This park encompasses a significant portion of the coastline and marine environment, notable for its whale tail-shaped sandbar.
Visual Characteristics
The park's primary visual feature is the "Cola de Ballena" (Whale's Tail), a 300-meter-long sandbar that extends into the ocean, forming a distinct tail shape visible at low tide. The coastline consists of sandy beaches with moderate wave action. Offshore, the water color varies from turquoise to deep blue depending on depth and light conditions. The terrestrial boundary of the park includes tropical dry forest vegetation.
Location & Access Logistics
Marino Ballena National Park is situated approximately 170 kilometers south of San José, accessible via the Costanera Sur Highway (Route 34). The main entrance and administrative office are located in Uvita. Parking is available at designated lots near the Uvita entrance, with a fee. Public transport options include intercity buses traveling between San José and the Osa Peninsula, with stops in Uvita. Boat tours depart from Uvita and Bahía Ballena.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Established on February 25, 1989, Marino Ballena National Park was created to protect the marine ecosystem, particularly the breeding and calving grounds for humpback whales. Ecologically, the park protects a critical segment of the Pacific coast, including coral reefs, mangrove systems, and marine life habitats. It is part of the larger Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System.
Key Highlights & Activities
Whale watching tours are a primary activity, especially during migration seasons (July-October and December-April). Snorkeling and diving are possible around the nearby coral reefs. Kayaking and paddleboarding are available in calmer waters. Hiking trails are present in the terrestrial sections of the park. Swimming is permitted in designated areas.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Restrooms are available at the Uvita entrance. Limited shade is provided by natural vegetation and some picnic areas. Cell phone signal (4G) is generally available in Uvita and along the coast. Food vendors and small restaurants are located in Uvita and the surrounding communities.
Best Time to Visit
The best time for whale watching is during the humpback whale migration seasons: July to October for southern hemisphere whales and December to April for northern hemisphere whales. The dry season, from December to April, offers the most favorable weather conditions with less rainfall. Low tide is essential for viewing and walking on the Whale's Tail sandbar.
Facts & Legends
The Whale's Tail sandbar is only fully visible and accessible during low tide. Local folklore suggests that the shape of the sandbar is a natural signpost guiding whales to the protected waters for calving.
