Nauyaca Waterfalls, Zona Sur, Costa Rica, North America

Nauyaca Waterfalls is a two-tiered waterfall system located in the Zona Sur region of Costa Rica.

The falls are situated on the Barú River, approximately 8 kilometers northwest of Dominical.

Visual Characteristics

The upper tier of Nauyaca Waterfalls drops approximately 45 meters, followed by a 20-meter drop for the lower tier. The water cascades over a cliff face composed of sedimentary rock. The surrounding vegetation is dense tropical rainforest, characterized by broadleaf evergreen trees and a variety of epiphytes. The pools at the base of the falls are clear to turquoise, depending on recent rainfall.

Location & Access Logistics

Access to Nauyaca Waterfalls is primarily via a private road originating from the Costanera Highway (Route 34). The turn-off is marked and located approximately 4 kilometers south of Dominical. The road is unpaved and can be rough, requiring a 4x4 vehicle for independent access. Alternatively, visitors can park at the designated entrance point and arrange for transport via horseback or 4x4 shuttle service offered by the property owners. The distance from the highway turn-off to the waterfall entrance is approximately 4 kilometers. Public transport to Dominical is available via local bus services from San José or Quepos. From Dominical, a taxi or pre-arranged shuttle is necessary.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Nauyaca Waterfalls is a natural geological formation. The falls are part of the Savegre River basin, which is characterized by its high biodiversity and significant rainfall. The rock formations are primarily sedimentary, shaped by millions of years of erosion from the Barú River. The surrounding ecosystem is classified as a tropical wet forest, supporting a wide array of flora and fauna.

Key Highlights & Activities

Swimming is permitted in the natural pools at the base of the lower waterfall. Visitors can hike the trails to access both tiers of the falls. Observation platforms are available for viewing the upper and lower cascades. Horseback riding tours are offered to reach the waterfalls.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Restrooms are available at the waterfall entrance area. Limited shade is provided by the surrounding forest canopy. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally unreliable within the trail system and at the falls. Food vendors are typically present at the main entrance point, offering snacks and beverages.

Best Time to Visit

The best time of day for photography is generally mid-morning to early afternoon when sunlight can penetrate the canopy, illuminating the water. The dry season, from December to April, offers more predictable weather and lower water levels, making access easier and swimming conditions calmer. During the rainy season (May to November), water flow is higher, but trails can be muddy and slippery.

Facts & Legends

Local lore suggests that the name "Nauyaca" originates from the indigenous Nahuatl language, possibly referring to a type of snake or a water spirit. A specific tip for visitors is to wear water shoes, as the rocks in and around the pools can be slippery.
