Moulin Rouge, Paris, France, Europe

The Moulin Rouge is a world-famous cabaret located at the foot of Montmartre in the Pigalle district of the 18th arrondissement of Paris. It is the birthplace of the modern form of the can-can dance and a global symbol of French nightlife and the Belle Époque.

Visual Characteristics

The establishment is instantly recognizable by the red windmill (moulin rouge) on its roof, which is illuminated at night. The exterior features neon signage and a classic theater marquee. The interior, known as the "Salle Toulouse-Lautrec," is decorated in a plush, red-velvet Belle Époque style, with tiered seating and small tables designed for dinner-theater service.

Location & Access Logistics

The cabaret is situated at 82 Boulevard de Clichy. It is directly accessible via the Métro at station Blanche (Line 2), which is located immediately in front of the entrance. It is also a short walk from Pigalle (Lines 2 and 12). Public parking is available at the "Parking Clichy Montmartre" nearby. Due to high demand, tickets must be booked weeks or months in advance.

Historical Origin

Founded in 1889 by Joseph Oller and Charles Zidler, the Moulin Rouge was designed to be a place where the rich could "slum it" and interact with the bohemian artists of Montmartre. It was immortalized in the posters and paintings of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, who was a frequent patron. The original building was destroyed by fire in 1915 and rebuilt in its current form in 1921.

Key Highlights & Activities

Féerie Show: The current resident production features a troupe of 80 artists, including 60 "Doriss Girls," 1,000 costumes of feathers and rhinestones, and a giant aquarium.

French Can-Can: The show's finale features the high-kicking, high-energy dance that made the venue famous.

Dinner & Show: Guests can choose between a "show only" experience (with champagne) or a multi-course French gastronomic dinner served before the performance.

Infrastructure & Amenities

The venue operates under a strict "smart dress" code (shorts, flip-flops, and sportswear are prohibited; jackets and ties are encouraged but not mandatory). 5G/4G signals are strong in the area. The theater is accessible to mobility-impaired visitors, but advance notification is required to ensure appropriate seating. Taking photographs or videos during the performance is strictly forbidden.

Best Time to Visit

Performances typically occur twice nightly, at 21:00 and 23:00. The earlier show often includes the dinner option, while the 23:00 show is generally "show only." To capture the iconic exterior lighting, the blue hour (just after sunset) is the optimal time for photography.

Facts & Legends

A significant historical fact is that the Moulin Rouge was the first building in Paris to be entirely powered by electricity. Legend and history converge in the stories of La Goulue (The Glutton), the most famous can-can dancer of the 19th century, who became the highest-paid entertainer in Paris during her peak at the cabaret.
