Siri Fort, New Delhi, India, Asia

Siri Fort is a fortified complex located in South Delhi, India. It was the third of the seven ancient cities of Delhi.

Visual Characteristics

The fort is constructed primarily from red sandstone and rubble masonry. Portions of the outer walls and gateways remain, exhibiting robust, defensive architecture. The remaining structures include remnants of walls, bastions, and gateways, with a central audience hall (Diwan-i-Aam) and a mosque.

Location & Access Logistics

Siri Fort is situated approximately 12 kilometers south of Connaught Place, New Delhi. Access is via Aurobindo Marg (Mehrauli-Badarpur Road). Public transport options include the Delhi Metro Yellow Line to Hauz Khas station, followed by a 2km auto-rickshaw or bus ride. Several DTC bus routes serve the area, including routes 448, 448A, and 448CL. Limited parking is available near the site.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Siri Fort was built by Alauddin Khilji, the ruler of the Delhi Sultanate, starting in 1303 AD. Its original purpose was to serve as a defensive fortification against Mongol invasions and as the capital of his empire. The site is located on a rocky outcrop.

Key Highlights & Activities

Exploration of the remaining fort walls and gateways. Viewing the architectural remnants of the audience hall and mosque. The area is also a popular spot for local recreation, including walking and jogging within the wider Siri Fort complex grounds.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Basic restroom facilities are available within the Siri Fort Sports Complex adjacent to the historical ruins. Shade is limited to the existing structures and scattered trees. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally good. Food vendors are typically found outside the main historical site, near the sports complex entrance.

Best Time to Visit

The best time for photography is during the early morning or late afternoon when the sunlight casts shadows on the sandstone structures. The most favorable months for visiting are from October to March, avoiding the intense heat of summer and the monsoon season. There are no tide-dependent activities.

Facts & Legends

A notable historical detail is that Siri Fort was the first city of Delhi to be built by a Muslim ruler. Legend suggests that the fort's construction was so rapid that the blood of the laborers was mixed with the mortar, though this is unsubstantiated.
