The original Auberge was constructed between 1571 and 1574, designed by the architect Girolamo Cassar. Its initial purpose was to serve as the residence for the knights of the Order of Saint John from the Langue of Castille, León, and Portugal. The current Baroque edifice was largely rebuilt between 1741 and 1745 under the direction of architect Andrea Belli. Since 1972, the building has served as the official Office of the Prime Minister of Malta.
