The building, the Auberge de Provence, was constructed between 1571 and 1575. Its architect was Girolamo Cassar. The original purpose of the structure was to serve as one of the auberges for the Knights of the Order of St. John, specifically for the Knights of the Langue of Provence. It was officially inaugurated as the National Museum of Archaeology in 1958.
