Auberge d'Italie, Valletta, Malta, Europe
The Auberge d'Italie is a historic palace located in the capital city of Valletta, Malta. It served as the auberge for the Knights of the Order of Saint John from the Langue of Italy.
Visual Characteristics
The building exhibits a Mannerist and early Baroque architectural style, constructed primarily from local globigerina limestone. Its facade features a rusticated ground floor, a piano nobile with ornate windows, and a prominent main entrance portal. The structure is three stories high, characterized by a symmetrical design and decorative elements such as cornices and balustrades. The limestone naturally presents a warm, honey-colored hue, which changes with the sunlight.
Location & Access Logistics
The Auberge d'Italie is situated on Merchants Street (Triq il-Merkanti) in central Valletta. It is approximately 0.7 kilometers from the main City Gate entrance to Valletta, a walk of about 10 minutes. Valletta is largely pedestrianized; therefore, direct vehicle access to the building's immediate vicinity is restricted. Public transport to Valletta terminates at the main bus station just outside the city walls. From there, visitors walk into the city. Limited paid parking is available at the MCP Car Park beneath Floriana, approximately 1.2 kilometers southwest, requiring a walk into Valletta.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Construction of the Auberge d'Italie commenced in 1574, with significant portions completed by 1579. The primary architect was Girolamo Cassar, who designed many of Valletta's early buildings. Its original purpose was to house the Italian Knights of the Order of Saint John, providing them with a communal residence and administrative center. Over centuries, it has served various functions, including a military headquarters, a school, and a post office. Since 2018, it has housed the offices of the Malta Tourism Authority and the national art museum, MUŻA.
Key Highlights & Activities
Visitors can explore the public areas of MUŻA, the national community art museum, which is housed within the Auberge d'Italie. The museum offers access to various exhibition spaces and courtyards. Guided tours of the museum are available during operational hours. The exterior of the building is accessible for viewing at all times, allowing appreciation of its architectural details.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Restrooms are available within the MUŻA museum during its opening hours. The building itself provides shade along its facade, particularly during parts of the day. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is consistently strong throughout central Valletta, including this location. Numerous cafes, restaurants, and food vendors are located within a 100-meter radius on Merchants Street and surrounding thoroughfares.
Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit for exterior photography is during the late morning or late afternoon, when the sun illuminates the limestone facade at an angle, enhancing its texture and color. The months of April to June and September to October offer pleasant weather conditions for exploring Valletta, avoiding the peak summer heat and winter rains. As an urban landmark, tide requirements are not applicable.
Facts & Legends
A unique historical fact is that the Auberge d'Italie was one of the first buildings in Valletta to be equipped with electricity in the late 19th century, serving as a pioneering example of modernization in the city. During World War II, the building sustained damage from aerial bombardment but was subsequently restored.
