Visual Characteristics
The rock formation rises approximately 143 meters (470 feet) above sea level. It is composed of volcanic tuff, presenting a dark grey to black coloration. The sheer cliffs are vertical, with visible erosion patterns. The channel between the two rock masses is approximately 15 meters (50 feet) wide.
Location & Access Logistics
Kicker Rock is situated approximately 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) northwest of Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, the capital of the Galápagos Province. Access is exclusively by boat. Tour operators based in Puerto Baquerizo Moreno offer day trips, typically departing around 9:00 AM and returning by 3:00 PM. No direct road access or parking is available at the site itself.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Kicker Rock is a remnant of a volcanic cone that has been significantly eroded by wave action over millennia. It is classified as a volcanic tuff formation. Its geological origin dates back to the volcanic activity that formed the Galápagos Islands.
Key Highlights & Activities
The primary activity at Kicker Rock is snorkeling and scuba diving. The channel between the rocks is a known aggregation point for marine life. Visitors can observe Galapagos sharks, hammerhead sharks, sea turtles, rays, and a variety of fish species. Swimming is possible within the channel. Boat tours circle the rock formation, allowing for observation from the water's surface.
Infrastructure & Amenities
There are no permanent infrastructure or amenities directly at Kicker Rock. Restrooms and food services are available on the tour boats. Cell phone signal is generally unreliable in this offshore location.
Best Time to Visit
The best time for marine life viewing is during the warmer months, from December to May, when water temperatures are higher. However, marine life is present year-round. Visibility for diving and snorkeling can vary; calmer seas are generally found in the morning. The site is accessible during daylight hours as part of organized boat tours.
Facts & Legends
A notable feature of Kicker Rock is the presence of a natural archway through which boats can pass. The rock formation's shape is often compared to a lion in repose, hence its Spanish name, León Dormido.
