Sierra Negra Volcano, Galapagos Islands, Ecuador, South America

Sierra Negra Volcano is an active shield volcano located on the southeastern side of Isabela Island in the Galapagos Islands, Ecuador. It is one of the largest and most active volcanoes in the archipelago.

Visual Characteristics

The volcano's caldera measures approximately 9.7 kilometers (6 miles) in diameter, making it one of the largest calderas in the world. The rim of the caldera reaches an elevation of 1,124 meters (3,688 feet). The landscape surrounding the volcano is characterized by solidified lava flows, sparse vegetation including Scalesia trees and various cacti, and volcanic ash deposits. The interior of the caldera is largely barren, with a prominent lava cone formed during the 1979 eruption.

Location & Access Logistics

Sierra Negra Volcano is situated on Isabela Island, accessible via a boat trip from Santa Cruz Island to Puerto Villamil. From Puerto Villamil, access is typically via a guided tour. The trailhead is approximately 13 kilometers (8 miles) from Puerto Villamil, reached by a dirt road. Parking is available at the trailhead. Public transport directly to the trailhead is not available; tours usually provide transportation.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Sierra Negra is a shield volcano formed by basaltic lava flows over millions of years. It is part of the Galapagos hotspot, a volcanic plume that has created the Galapagos Islands. The volcano's current form is the result of numerous eruptions, with the most recent significant eruption occurring in 2018. Its ecological origin is tied to the unique volcanic environment that supports endemic species adapted to these conditions.

Key Highlights & Activities

Hiking the rim of the caldera is the primary activity. A well-maintained trail allows visitors to circumnavigate a significant portion of the caldera's edge. Observing the vastness of the caldera and the central lava cone is a key highlight. Wildlife viewing opportunities include Galapagos hawks, finches, and potentially giant tortoises in the surrounding vegetation.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Basic amenities are available at the trailhead, including a small visitor center and restrooms. Shade is limited along the caldera rim. Cell phone signal is generally absent within the caldera and on the trails. Food vendors are not present at the volcano site; visitors should carry their own provisions.

Best Time to Visit

The best time for hiking is during the dry season, from June to December, when there is less rainfall. The morning hours offer clearer views of the caldera before potential cloud cover develops. There are no tide-dependent activities associated with visiting Sierra Negra Volcano.

Facts & Legends

The 1979 eruption of Sierra Negra was one of the most significant in Galapagos history, producing extensive lava flows that reshaped parts of the island. A unique geological feature is the "Volcano Wall," a steep cliff face on the eastern side of the caldera, offering dramatic views.
