La Catedral de la Habana is a Roman Catholic cathedral located in the historic center of Havana, Cuba. It is a significant example of Baroque architecture in the Americas.

Visual Characteristics

The cathedral is constructed primarily of coral stone, quarried from the seabed. Its facade features two unequal bell towers, a central nave, and two side aisles. The exterior is characterized by its weathered stone and ornate carvings. The interior displays a single nave with side chapels, adorned with marble and stucco work.

The cathedral is situated in Plaza de la Catedral, Old Havana. It is approximately 1km East of the Malecón. Access is via pedestrianized streets within the historic district. Limited public parking is available in designated lots around Old Havana, with the closest being the Parqueo Público San Francisco, approximately 200 meters South. Bus routes 1, 2, and 4 stop within a 500-meter radius of the plaza.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Construction of the cathedral began in 1748 and was completed in 1777. It was designed by Spanish architect Lorenzo de la Carrera. Originally, the site housed a Jesuit church. The cathedral's construction utilized coral stone, a material abundant in the region due to its geological history as a marine environment.

Key Highlights & Activities

Visitors can observe the architectural details of the Baroque facade and interior. The nave contains several chapels dedicated to various saints. The crypt beneath the main altar houses the remains of former archbishops. Photography is permitted inside the cathedral.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Restrooms are available within the cathedral complex. Limited shaded areas are present in the surrounding plaza. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally available in the area. Food vendors and small cafes are located on the streets adjacent to Plaza de la Catedral.

Best Time to Visit

For optimal interior lighting and fewer crowds, visit between 9:00 AM and 11:00 AM. The months of November through April offer drier weather conditions. No specific tide requirements are applicable.

Facts & Legends

A unique feature of La Catedral de la Habana is its asymmetrical bell towers, a design choice attributed to the original architect's intention to accommodate the existing structure of the plaza. Local lore suggests that the cathedral's stones absorbed the sounds of the sea during its construction, contributing to its unique acoustics.
