Mohammed Al Ameen Mosque, Muscat, Oman, Asia
The Mohammed Al Ameen Mosque, also known as the Al Ameen Mosque, is a prominent Islamic place of worship located in the Bawshar district of Muscat, Oman. Situated on a natural highland off the Sultan Qaboos Highway, it serves as a major landmark for the capital's southern residential and commercial sectors.
Visual Characteristics
The mosque is constructed from high-grade white marble and features two 62-meter-tall minarets. Its most distinctive physical characteristic is the set of three gold-colored domes that are illuminated at night using specialized LED projection technology. The interior prayer hall contains a 2,500-square-meter Persian carpet and a large crystal chandelier, with walls adorned in intricate wood carvings and Islamic calligraphy.
Location & Access Logistics
The site is positioned at the intersection of the Southern Expressway and the Al Jamiat Street in Bawshar, approximately 15km from Muscat International Airport. Access is via the 22nd November Street or the Southern Expressway exits. A large, paved surface parking lot surrounds the perimeter for private vehicles. While there is no direct bus stop at the mosque gates, Mwasalat bus routes serve the nearby Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex, located 1.2km to the west.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Commissioned by the Al Ameen family and designed by international architectural consultants, the mosque was officially inaugurated in 2014. It was built to accommodate the growing population of the Bawshar and Al Khuwair districts. The architectural style blends traditional Omani fortress-like structural massing with contemporary Persian and Egyptian decorative elements.
Key Highlights & Activities
The main prayer hall has a capacity for 2,100 male worshippers, while a separate dedicated hall accommodates 500 women. Guided tours are generally restricted to Muslims during prayer times, but the exterior grounds and architectural features are accessible for viewing. Silent observation of the interior marble work and the central golden dome is the primary activity for visitors.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The facility includes modern wudhu (ablution) areas, climate-controlled prayer halls, and public restrooms. There is strong 5G cellular signal throughout the site. While there are no food vendors on the mosque grounds, the building is located within 0.5km of the Panorama Mall and various commercial dining outlets. Large shaded porticos provide cover from the sun around the main entrance.
Best Time to Visit
The best time for photography is at dusk when the gold domes are illuminated against the dark sky. For interior viewing, non-prayer times between 08:30 and 11:00 are optimal, excluding Fridays. The winter months of November through March offer the most temperate conditions for walking the exterior marble courtyards.
Facts & Legends
The mosque is elevated at approximately 60 meters above sea level, making its golden domes visible from several kilometers away, including from parts of the Al Khuwair and Ghala districts. It is frequently cited by pilots and navigators as a visual waypoint due to its distinct nighttime lighting profile.
