Oman Oil and Gas Exhibition Centre, Muscat, Oman, Asia
The Oman Oil and Gas Exhibition Centre is a corporate and educational facility located in the Al Qurum district of Muscat, Oman. Situated within the Knowledge World complex near the Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) headquarters, it serves as a specialized museum detailing the technical evolution of the Sultanate’s energy sector.
Visual Characteristics
The center is a contemporary architectural structure featuring a clean, geometric facade with extensive glass paneling and a sand-colored stone finish. The interior is designed as an interactive high-tech gallery with metallic surfaces, LED-backlit displays, and large-scale industrial models. A prominent feature of the site is the adjacent Ecoman Centre, which utilizes sustainable building materials and solar-shading structures to demonstrate renewable energy concepts.
Location & Access Logistics
The facility is located on Sayh Al Malih Street in the Mina Al Fahal area of Al Qurum, approximately 10km east of the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque. Access is via the Sultan Qaboos Street (Highway 1) followed by the Al Qurum exit toward the PDO residential camp. Ample paved parking for private vehicles and tour buses is available on-site. The nearest Mwasalat bus stop is located on the main road near the Al Qurum Park, necessitating a 2km taxi ride to reach the exhibition gates.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The center was inaugurated in 1995 as a gift from Petroleum Development Oman to the nation to commemorate the 25th National Day. It was designed to provide a comprehensive technical overview of hydrocarbon exploration, from seismic surveying to refinery processing. The neighboring Ecoman Centre was added later to address the ecological transition toward solar and wind energy in the Hajar Mountain and desert environments.
Key Highlights & Activities
Visitors engage with hands-on exhibits including a simulated drilling rig floor and 3D cinematic presentations of geological formations. The "Journey of Oil" tour follows a chronological path from the formation of crude oil millions of years ago to modern extraction methods. Educational workshops focusing on physics and renewable energy are frequently held in the dedicated science wings.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The center is fully climate-controlled and features modern public restrooms, a small lecture theater, and a reception lobby. There is full 5G cellular coverage throughout the facility. While there are no dining facilities inside the exhibition, the Al Qurum commercial area, located 3km away, offers a wide range of international food vendors and cafes.
Best Time to Visit
The facility is strictly an indoor attraction, making it suitable for visits during the midday heat (12:00 to 15:00). It is typically open from Sunday to Thursday, 08:00 to 15:00. Prior booking is often required for large groups or school tours to ensure staff availability for guided technical demonstrations.
Facts & Legends
A primary exhibit is the original seismic recording equipment used during the first successful oil discovery at the Fahud field in 1964. A local "secret" for visitors is the master clock system synchronized with PDO's operational headquarters, which once served as a primary time-keeping reference for the surrounding Mina Al Fahal industrial district.
