Dindefelo Falls, Kedougou, Senegal, Africa
Dindefelo Falls is a 115-meter-high waterfall located in the southeastern corner of Senegal within the Kedougou region. It is the highest waterfall in the country, situated at the edge of the Fouta Djallon plateau near the border with Guinea.
Visual Characteristics
The waterfall features a single vertical drop of water that falls into a circular, translucent green plunge pool. The surrounding cliff face is composed of jagged, dark grey volcanic rock and red sandstone, heavily covered in moss and ferns. The site is enclosed within a steep, horseshoe-shaped canyon characterized by dense gallery forest vegetation and large liana vines.
Location & Access Logistics
The falls are located approximately 35km southwest of the town of Kedougou. Access requires traveling via the P3221 unpaved road to the village of Dindefelo. From the village, a 2km pedestrian trail leads through the forest to the base of the falls; the hike takes approximately 20 to 30 minutes. 4x4 vehicles are recommended for the road journey from Kedougou, particularly during the transition to the wet season.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The falls are part of the Dindefelo Community Nature Reserve, established in 2010 to protect the local chimpanzee population and the plateau's biodiversity. The geological formation is a result of the erosion of the Fouta Djallon mountain range, where water from the plateau surface drops over a basaltic escarpment into the valley below.
Key Highlights & Activities
Swimming is permitted in the natural plunge pool at the base of the falls, which remains cool throughout the year. Hiking trails allow for the ascent to the top of the plateau to view the source of the waterfall and the "Grotte de Dindefelo." Birdwatching and primate observation are common activities along the approach trail, as the area is a habitat for West African chimpanzees.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Infrastructure at the site is minimal, consisting of a basic ticket kiosk at the entrance of the village trail. There are no restrooms, paved paths, or permanent food vendors at the waterfall itself; these facilities are located within Dindefelo village. Shade is abundant due to the dense forest canopy. 4G cellular signal is weak and often disappears entirely within the canyon.
Best Time to Visit
The waterfall is most powerful during the rainy season and immediately following it, from late July to October. For photography, the late morning (10:00 to 12:00) provides the best light as the sun reaches the bottom of the deep canyon. During the peak of the dry season (March to May), the flow of water significantly decreases to a thin stream.
Facts & Legends
Local tradition holds that the waterfall was discovered in the 1920s by a hunter named Manga Dian Pathé, who followed his dog to the site. A specific tip for visitors is that the water temperature in the pool remains significantly lower than the surrounding air, providing a thermal refuge when valley temperatures exceed 40°C.
