Segou Falls, Kedougou, Senegal, Africa
Segou Falls is a tiered waterfall located near the village of Segou in the southeastern corner of Senegal, within the Kedougou region. It is situated in the foothills of the Fouta Djallon plateau, serving as a critical water source for the surrounding gallery forest and the local Bedik and Fulani communities.
Visual Characteristics
The waterfall features a vertical drop of approximately 20 meters over a dark basaltic rock face, followed by a series of smaller cascades. The rock is textured with volcanic formations and covered in moss and ferns due to the high humidity of the ravine. The base contains a shallow plunge pool surrounded by dense gallery forest, including large mahogany trees and mahogany vines.
Location & Access Logistics
The site is located 30km southwest of Kedougou. Access is via the P3221 unpaved road to Segou village, followed by a 1.5km pedestrian trail that follows the riverbed. The road from Kedougou requires a 4x4 vehicle, particularly during the rainy season when the track becomes muddy. There is no formal parking; vehicles typically stop at the village center before the trailhead.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The falls are geologically part of the Madina-Kouta basin, formed by the erosion of the Fouta Djallon mountain range's sandstone and volcanic layers. It was integrated into the Dindefelo Community Nature Reserve in 2010. Historically, the ravine served as a sheltered transit route for nomadic populations and local hunters moving toward the Guinean border.
Key Highlights & Activities
Hiking through the narrow ravine is the primary activity, often involving scrambling over river stones. Swimming is possible in the natural basins at the foot of the falls. The area is a prime location for primate tracking, as West African chimpanzees frequently use the permanent water source. Birdwatching for rare species such as the Narina Trogon is also common.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Infrastructure at the waterfall itself is non-existent. There are no restrooms, paved paths, or signage within the ravine. Basic facilities, including small shops selling water and bread, are located in Segou village. Shade is abundant throughout the trek due to the dense forest canopy. 4G cellular signal is weak or unavailable once inside the canyon.
Best Time to Visit
The waterfall is at its most powerful from August to October during the peak of the rainy season. For photography, the late morning (10:00 to 11:30) provides the best visibility before the canyon walls cast deep shadows. During the dry season (March to May), the flow is significantly reduced, but the trail is easier to navigate.
Facts & Legends
Segou village is a strategic border community where traditional Guinea-Senegal trade routes converge. Local residents consider the ravine a "cool room" (chambre froide), as the microclimate within the canyon remains consistently 5 to 10 degrees Celsius cooler than the surrounding savanna plains.
