Mohegan Bluffs, New Shoreham, USA Rhode Island, North America
Mohegan Bluffs is a series of coastal cliffs located on the southern shore of Block Island, Rhode Island, USA.
Visual Characteristics
The bluffs consist of steep, eroded clay and sand formations reaching heights of approximately 200 feet above sea level. The exposed soil layers exhibit varied coloration, including shades of brown, red, and grey. Vegetation at the cliff top is primarily low-lying coastal scrub and grasses. The Atlantic Ocean below is typically a deep blue, with wave action creating white foam at the base of the cliffs.
Location & Access Logistics
Mohegan Bluffs is situated at the southern terminus of Mohegan Trail in New Shoreham, Rhode Island. It is approximately 5 miles (8 km) south of the main ferry terminal and town center. Access is via Mohegan Trail, a paved road. Parking is available in a designated lot adjacent to the bluffs. From the parking area, a wooden staircase with approximately 100 steps descends to the beach below.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The bluffs are a result of glacial deposition and subsequent erosion by wave action and wind. The clay deposits are part of the Ronkonkoma Moraine, formed during the last glacial period. The name "Mohegan" refers to the indigenous Mohegan tribe who historically inhabited the region.
Key Highlights & Activities
Observation of the cliff formations and ocean views from the top. Descending the staircase to the beach for exploration. Birdwatching is possible, particularly during migration seasons. Photography of the geological features and coastal scenery.
Infrastructure & Amenities
A small parking area is present. No permanent restroom facilities are located directly at the bluffs. Shade is minimal, primarily provided by natural vegetation at the cliff edge. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally available in the vicinity.
Best Time to Visit
For photography, early morning or late afternoon light provides optimal illumination of the cliff faces. Weather is generally most favorable for outdoor activities between May and October. High tide can reduce beach access at the base of the bluffs.
Facts & Legends
Local lore suggests that the Mohegan people used these bluffs as a vantage point for observing ships and as a ceremonial site. A specific legend tells of a Mohegan chief who, to avoid capture by enemies, led his tribe and their horses over the cliffs into the sea.
