North Lighthouse, New Shoreham, USA Rhode Island, North America

The North Lighthouse is a historic navigational aid situated on Block Island, off the coast of New Shoreham, Rhode Island, USA.

Visual Characteristics

Constructed from granite blocks, the lighthouse stands 64 feet tall. Its exterior is painted white, with a black lantern room. The tower is cylindrical, tapering slightly towards the top.

Location & Access Logistics

The North Lighthouse is located at the northern tip of Block Island. It is approximately 7 miles from the main ferry terminal in Old Harbor. Access is via Corn Neck Road, a paved public road. Parking is available in a designated gravel lot adjacent to the lighthouse. No public bus service directly reaches the lighthouse; visitors typically drive or cycle.

Historical & Ecological Origin

The current North Lighthouse was constructed in 1867, replacing an earlier structure built in 1829. It was built by the U.S. Lighthouse Board to guide ships into Block Island Sound. The site is composed of glacial till and bedrock.

Key Highlights & Activities

Visitors can climb to the top of the lighthouse during scheduled tour times. The surrounding grounds offer opportunities for birdwatching. Coastal walks are possible along the adjacent shoreline.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Restrooms are available near the parking area. Limited shade is provided by natural vegetation. Cell phone signal (4G) is generally available. No food vendors are present at the lighthouse site; visitors should bring provisions.

Best Time to Visit

For optimal photography, early morning or late afternoon light provides good illumination of the tower. The best months for visiting are May through October, avoiding the winter storm season. Tidal conditions do not affect access to the lighthouse itself.

Facts & Legends

The original North Lighthouse was decommissioned and sold in 1955. A local legend suggests that the ghost of a former keeper, Silas, can sometimes be seen tending the light, though this is unverified.
