Oman Aquarium is the first and largest public aquarium in the Sultanate, located within the Mall of Muscat in the Maabela district of Muscat. It spans three floors and covers 8,000 square meters, housing over 30,000 marine animals representing approximately 1,000 species.

The facility is a modern indoor complex centered around a massive 1.8-million-liter main tank featuring a 9-meter-long acrylic walkthrough tunnel. Displays are designed with high-definition lighting and artificial coral reef structures that replicate the underwater topography of the Gulf of Oman. The architecture follows a multi-level layout with curved glass viewing panels, specialized laboratory zones, and themed galleries ranging from tropical rainforests to deep-sea environments.

Location & Access Logistics

The aquarium is situated in Al Maabela, roughly 25km west of Muscat International Airport and 35km from the city center. It is accessed via the Muscat Expressway or the Sultan Qaboos Highway, exiting toward Maabela North. Ample multi-story and surface parking is available at the Mall of Muscat. While Mwasalat buses serve the Maabela area, visitors typically require a taxi from the main bus stops to reach the mall entrance.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Opened in April 2019, the aquarium was developed as a flagship project to promote marine conservation and education in Oman. It is based on the journey of the 15th-century Omani explorer Ahmad bin Majid, following the maritime routes he traveled. The exhibits focus on the ecological diversity of Omani waters, featuring species such as the Omani shark, green sea turtles, and various rays, while highlighting the Sultanate’s coral reef protection initiatives.

Visitors can walk through the shark tunnel for a 270-degree view of apex predators or visit the penguin exhibit to observe the daily feeding sessions. Interactive "touch tanks" allow for the close inspection of starfish and small rays under staff supervision. The facility offers educational tours focused on marine biology and the "behind-the-scenes" filtration systems that maintain the synthetic seawater environment.

As an integral part of a major mall, the aquarium is fully climate-controlled with modern restrooms, baby changing rooms, and elevators for wheelchair accessibility. The aquarium is an indoor facility, making it suitable for visits throughout the day, particularly during the peak afternoon heat. It operates during mall hours, typically 10:00 to 22:00 (later on weekends). Arriving on a weekday morning is recommended to avoid the crowds associated with school tours and weekend families.

The aquarium features a unique "Ecoman" initiative, where rescued sea turtles are rehabilitated in specialized tanks before being released back into the wild. A local point of interest is the inclusion of several rare deep-water species that were specifically collected from the Oman Sea depths to provide a unique scientific look at creatures rarely seen by divers.
