Saly Golf Course, Mbour, Senegal, Africa
Saly Golf Course (Golf de Saly) is an 18-hole international-standard golf facility located in the resort district of Saly Portudal, Senegal. It serves as the primary recreational centerpiece for the Petite Côte tourism corridor, situated approximately 80km south of Dakar in the Mbour Department.
Visual Characteristics
The course features a 60-hectare parkland layout characterized by flat, manicured Bermuda grass fairways and greens. It is visually defined by dense groves of ancient baobab trees, palm clusters, and flowering flamboyant trees that contrast with the surrounding dry savannah. Man-made water hazards and strategically placed white-sand bunkers provide technical obstacles across the level terrain, which is bordered by white-washed Mediterranean-style villas.
Location & Access Logistics
The facility is located on the Route de Saly, approximately 1.5km inland from the Saly Center intersection. Access from Dakar is via the A1 Toll Road (Saly/Mbour exit). Public transport is available through yellow-and-black taxis operating within the Saly resort zone. For international arrivals, the course is a 30-minute drive from Blaise Diagne International Airport (AIBD). A large, paved private parking lot is available at the clubhouse entrance.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Developed in the early 1980s as part of the state-led SAPCO initiative to establish Saly as a premier "Station Balnéaire," the course was designed to attract European and regional golf tourism. Geologically, it occupies a stabilized sandy terrace. The facility utilizes a dedicated irrigation system that recycled wastewater to maintain the greenery through the nine-month dry season, functioning as a localized green lung for the urbanized resort area.
Key Highlights & Activities
The main activity is a par-72 round of golf spanning approximately 6,000 meters. A dedicated practice area includes a driving range, putting greens, and a bunker for sand-play training. Professional coaching is available at the onsite academy. Beyond golf, the facility offers a clubhouse restaurant and bar, as well as access to a swimming pool and tennis courts located within the sports complex.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The clubhouse contains a pro-shop for equipment sales and rentals, changing rooms, and shower facilities. Caddy services and motorized golf carts are available for hire. The entire course has full 4G and 5G cellular coverage from national providers. While shade is abundant under the baobab and palm canopies, most of the fairways are exposed to direct sunlight. Water and refreshments are available at the clubhouse and from mobile vendors on the course.
Best Time to Visit
The optimal playing season is from November to May when the weather is dry and temperatures are moderate (20°C to 28°C). Tee times are recommended for the early morning (07:30 to 09:00) to avoid the high thermal radiation of the afternoon. Photography is best in the late afternoon when the low sun casts long shadows from the baobab trunks across the green fairways.
Facts & Legends
The course is notable for its "Baobab Hazards," where several centuries-old trees are positioned directly in the line of play, requiring high-arcing shots or strategic navigation. Local birdlife, including the Senegal parrot and various hornbills, utilize these trees as nesting sites. A local point of pride is that the course remained the only professional 18-hole facility in Senegal for several decades, anchoring the region's sports tourism identity.
