Karongi Stadium, officially known as the Gatwaro Stadium, is a multi-purpose athletic facility located in the Karongi District of Rwanda's Western Province. It serves as a primary venue for football matches, regional athletic competitions, and civic gatherings within the Karongi urban center.

The stadium features a natural grass playing surface surrounded by a red-earth running track. The primary grandstand is a reinforced concrete structure with a cantilevered corrugated metal roof painted in green and yellow. The perimeter is defined by high masonry walls and security fencing, set against a backdrop of steep, terraced volcanic hills.

The facility is situated in the Gatwaro cell of the Bwishyura sector, approximately 1.5km from the Karongi town center. It is accessible via the RN7 highway and the paved Karongi-Nyamasheke road. Limited on-site parking is available for official vehicles, while public transport users utilize local motorcycle taxis (motos) or the Karongi bus terminal located 1.2km to the North.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Constructed as part of Rwanda’s post-1994 infrastructure development, the stadium was built to provide a centralized sporting hub for the Western Province. Historically, the Gatwaro site is also known as a significant location during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, now marked by nearby memorial sites. The stadium sits on a leveled plateau carved into the regional metamorphic rock.

Professional football matches involving Rwanda Premier League teams or second-division local clubs occur during the league season. The facility hosts inter-school track and field championships and serves as the assembly point for national holidays and regional government addresses. Public jogging is permitted on the perimeter track during designated non-event hours.

The stadium includes tiered concrete seating for approximately 5,000 spectators and basic dressing room facilities for athletes. Public latrines are located near the southern entrance. Shade is restricted to the main covered stand, and 4G/5G cellular coverage is consistently available throughout the grounds. No permanent food vendors exist inside the stadium; refreshments are sold by independent vendors at the gates during events.

Best Time to Visit

Match days usually fall on Saturday or Sunday afternoons starting at 15:00. For photography of the stadium set against the Lake Kivu landscape, the late afternoon (16:30–17:30) provides optimal golden hour lighting. The dry months of July and August ensure the pitch remains firm and accessible.

Facts & Legends

The stadium is colloquially referred to as "Gatwaro" due to its location on the hill of the same name. A historical oddity of the site is its dual identity as a center for modern regional recreation and a solemn site of historical remembrance, reflecting the complex social fabric of the Karongi district.
