Peace Island, Karongi, Rwanda, Africa
Peace Island, also frequently referred to as Amahoro Island, is a small, privately managed landmass situated within the Karongi archipelago of Lake Kivu. It is located approximately 2km southwest of the Karongi (Kibuye) urban waterfront in Rwanda.
Visual Characteristics
The island is characterized by a rounded, green-canopied profile and a rocky shoreline interspersed with small wooden piers. The interior features manicured grass lawns, terraced stone pathways, and a dense collection of eucalyptus and ornamental trees. The surrounding water is deep, clear, and generally calm due to the island's sheltered position within the bay.
Location & Access Logistics
Access is exclusively by boat from the Karongi town docks or nearby lakeside resorts such as Moriah Hill. The boat transit takes approximately 15 to 20 minutes across open water. Private boat hires and organized tours are the standard transport methods, as there is no public ferry service to the island.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Peace Island is a volcanic outcrop formed by the tectonic shifting of the Albertine Rift. Its name, "Amahoro" (meaning "Peace" in Kinyarwanda), reflects its post-conflict development into a sanctuary for leisure and conservation. The island serves as a localized habitat for various bird species and small reptiles, protected by its physical isolation from the mainland.
Key Highlights & Activities
Swimming and snorkeling are the primary activities, facilitated by the clear, deep water and absence of large aquatic predators. The island features a small bar and restaurant area catering to day-trippers. Kayaking around the perimeter is common, and designated areas are available for camping and picnicking under the eucalyptus canopy.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The facility includes a central bar and restaurant structure, several shaded wooden gazebos, and basic restroom facilities. 4G cellular signal is available across the island. There are no permanent medical facilities or shops; all commercial supplies are transported daily from the Karongi mainland.
Best Time to Visit
The best time for a visit is during the dry season months of June to August when the water is calmest for swimming and boating. For photography, the late afternoon (16:30 to 18:00) provides views of the sun setting over the Congolese mountains. Weekend afternoons are the most active periods for social gatherings.
Facts & Legends
A unique feature of the island is that it is one of the few places in Lake Kivu with a developed "beach club" atmosphere on an isolated landmass. A logistical tip for visitors is to confirm return boat arrangements before sunset, as navigation after dark on the lake is strictly regulated.
