Khor Al Qurum is a nature reserve and mangrove ecosystem situated along the coast of the Gulf of Oman in the Al Qurum district of Muscat, Oman. This site encompasses approximately 1.7 square kilometers of tidal forest and lagoons surrounded by urban infrastructure.
Visual Characteristics
The site features dense stands of Avicennia marina (grey mangrove) trees characterized by pneumatophores (aerial roots) protruding from muddy substrate. Water channels exhibit varying shades of green and brown depending on sediment and tidal levels. The surrounding geography consists of flat coastal plains with sandy beaches to the north and low-lying limestone hills to the south.
Location & Access Logistics
Access is via Al Qurum Street or Shati Al Qurum Street, approximately 15km east of Muscat International Airport and 5km from the Mutrah Corniche. Public transport via Mwasalat bus route 1 stops at the nearby Qurum Natural Park. Limited street parking is available near the Crowne Plaza Muscat or along the public beach access points.
Historical & Ecological Origin
This site was designated as a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance in 2013 and is a protected nature reserve under the Ministry of Environment and Climate Affairs. Geologically, it is a coastal lagoon formed by the accumulation of alluvial silt at the mouth of Wadi Aday.
Key Highlights & Activities
Birdwatching is the primary activity, with sightings of over 190 species including herons, egrets, and flamingos. Kayaking and paddleboarding are permitted through licensed operators during high tide. Walking is restricted to the perimeter boardwalks and paved paths of the adjacent Qurum Natural Park.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Public restrooms and shaded benches are located within the adjacent Qurum Natural Park. 4G and 5G cellular signals are consistent throughout the area. Food vendors, cafes, and restaurants are situated within a 0.5km radius along the Shati Al Qurum beachfront.
Best Time to Visit
The optimal months for weather and migratory bird sightings are between November and March. Photography is best during the "golden hour" shortly before sunset when the sun is positioned over the Gulf of Oman. High tide is required for water-based activities to navigate the inner channels.
Facts & Legends
The mangroves at Khor Al Qurum act as a natural carbon sink and a biological filter for urban runoff, protecting the local coastline from erosion. Local legend suggests the area was once a primary source of timber for traditional dhow construction before its protected status was established.
