The conservancy is situated approximately 2 hours (roughly 110 kilometers) south of Blantyre by vehicle, positioned near the town of Bangula within the Nsanje District. Private vehicles reach the site by driving south from the commercial hub via the paved M1 highway, descending the Rift Valley escarpment, and passing through Chikwawa and Nchalo before turning east onto the dirt and gravel access tracks of the Kaombe Estate. High-clearance vehicles are strongly recommended for navigating the internal estate paths. Public transit commuters can utilize a long-distance minibus from the central Blantyre terminal bound for Bangula or Nsanje, disembarking at the primary Kaombe or estate junction markers to coordinate private onward transfer to the reserve gates.

The sanctuary was developed as a dedicated land restoration and environmental project on private agricultural land managed by Agricane. In 2014, a secure boundary fence was constructed around the 750-hectare riparian forest block to halt illegal charcoal production and agricultural encroachment, allowing the native flora to regenerate naturally. Following the enclosure, a systematic wildlife reintroduction program was launched to restock the parcel with regional fauna. Ecologically, the conservancy serves as a vital buffer zone and wildlife corridor, sharing an immediate border with the massive 61,500-hectare Elephant Marsh Ramsar Site and positioned just 5 kilometers from the state-managed Mwabvi Wildlife Reserve.

Wildlife tracking and birdwatching represent the primary activities across the reserve. Guided game drives in open 4x4 safari vehicles and walking safaris led by field rangers allow visitors to track over 30 mammal species, including a resident herd of Cape buffalo, giraffes, zebras, and ten distinct species of antelope such as nyala, kudu, and impala. Specialized boat safaris launch directly from the property into the adjacent channels of the Elephant Marsh to view large hippo pods and Nile crocodiles. During this period, afternoon temperatures are comfortable, foliage thins out, and animals gather predictably around the permanent channels of the Thangadzi River and the lodge waterhole. The wet summer season from November to April brings intense tropical heat and heavy rainfall that enriches the riparian forest canopy, but makes dirt tracking roads slick and swells the marsh margins.
