Western Wall, Jerusalem, Israel, Asia
The Western Wall (Ha-Kotel Ha-Ma'aravi) serves as the primary religious and national focal point for the Jewish people and a significant site for Islam. It is a massive retaining wall on the western flank of the Temple Mount, located within the Old City of Jerusalem.
Historical Timeline
The wall’s foundations date to approximately 19 BCE, part of Herod the Great’s expansion of the Second Temple. Following the Roman destruction in 70 CE, this segment remained as a remnant of the Temple Mount’s enclosure. Significant restorations occurred during the Byzantine, Umayyad (7th century), and Ottoman periods. The current urban form was solidified in June 1967, when the Mughrabi Quarter was cleared to create the expansive Prayer Plaza.
Demographics & Population
Jerusalem's total population is approximately 980,000. While the plaza itself has no residents, the adjacent Jewish Quarter houses roughly 3,000 people. The site attracts over 10 million visitors annually. Despite recent regional fluctuations in tourism in early 2026, it remains the most visited site in Israel.
Urban Layout & Key Districts
The site is divided into a large open-air plaza and specialized subterranean sections. The Prayer Plaza (Central) features separate sections for men and women. The Southern Wall/Davidson Center (South) displays archaeological ruins from the Second Temple period. The Western Wall Tunnels (North) extend under the buildings of the Muslim Quarter, revealing the wall's full 488-meter length.

Transportation Network
Vehicular access is restricted within the Old City. The nearest drop-off is Dung Gate (South). Public bus lines 1, 3, and 38 stop at the gate. The Jerusalem Light Rail stops at City Hall station, followed by a 15-minute walk through the Jewish Quarter. "Park & Go" lots (Mount Herzl, Givat HaMivtar) allow visitors to leave cars and use the train. Taxis are white; traffic near the Old City remains extreme, especially on Friday afternoons.
Safety & "Red Zones"
Security at the Western Wall is permanent and high-intensity. All visitors must pass through metal detectors and bag checks. While the plaza is safe, localized tensions can occur at the Damascus Gate and surrounding Muslim Quarter alleys during peak religious holidays or political friction. Common scams include "freelance guides" demanding payment for prayer advice or unauthorized individuals distributing "red strings" for donations.
Digital & Financial Infrastructure
Free public Wi-Fi is provided across the plaza by the Western Wall Heritage Foundation. 5G coverage is robust. Financial transactions are not conducted at the wall itself due to its sanctity; however, the surrounding Jewish Quarter accepts all major cards and contactless payments. ATMs are located near the Hurva Synagogue and Zion Gate.
Climate & Air Quality
Jerusalem is mountainous (754m). Summers are hot and dry (20°C–32°C); winters are cool and wet (6°C–14°C). Snow occasionally falls in January or February. Air quality is generally high due to the lack of cars in the Old City, though the stone plaza can become extremely hot in direct summer sun.
Culture & Social Norms
Modest dress is mandatory: men must cover their heads (kippahs are provided) and women must cover shoulders and knees. Photography and electronic devices are strictly prohibited on Shabbat (Friday sunset to Saturday sunset). It is customary to walk away from the wall backward to maintain respect. Small notes placed in the wall's crevices are collected and buried twice a year at the Mount of Olives.

Facts & Legends
A prominent legend states that the Divine Presence (Shekhinah) never left the Western Wall. A verified historical marvel is the "Western Stone" in the tunnels, one of the largest building blocks in the world, weighing approximately 517 tons. It is also believed by Muslims to be the site (Al-Buraq Wall) where the Prophet Muhammad tethered his winged steed before ascending to heaven.
